Apple juice, bananas may lower childhood asthma

By Stephen Daniells

5/29/2007 - Increased consumption of apple juice or bananas may prevent childhood asthma, says new research from England that adds to an ever-growing body of science linking easy breathing to apples.

Researchers, led by Peter Burnley from the National Heart Group & Lung Institute at Imperial College, performed a population-based survey of 2,640 children aged between five and ten and found that regular consumption of apple juice was associated with a 47 per cent reduction in wheezing.

"We found no association between eating fresh apples and asthma symptoms in this population, but found some evidence to suggest that a higher consumption of apple juice from concentrate, and bananas, may protect against wheezing in children," wrote the authors in the European Respiratory Journal.

According to the European Federation of Allergy and Airway Diseases Patients Association (EFA), over 30m Europeans suffer from asthma, costing Europe €17.7bn every year. The cost due to lost productivity is estimated to be around €9.8bn.

List of 10 Steps to Minimize Your Carbon Footprint

Tip # 1
Get on Your Bike!

* For every mile you ride your bike instead of driving a car, you avoid the production of about one pound of carbon dioxide.

Tip # 2
Save Water with Powder Detergents

* Switch from liquid detergents to powders. Laundry liquids are mostly water (approx. 80%). It costs energy and packaging to bring this water to the consumer.

Tip # 3
Save a Tree, or Two or Three

* Get tough on tissues. If every household in the U.S. replaced one box of 85 sheet virgin fiber facial tissues with 100% recycled ones, we could save: 87,700 trees, 226,500 cubic feet of landfill space ( equal to 330 full garbage trucks), 31 million gallons of water (Annual supply for 240 families of four), and avoid 5,300 pounds of pollution! Buy only recycled paper products for your office, bathroom and kitchen.

Whole Grains Help Heart Health

By Jennifer Harper
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Break out the oatmeal and whole-wheat crackers: Eating between two and three servings of whole grains per day lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease by 21 percent, according to research released yesterday by the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

This does not mean choking down massive amounts of something unappetizing and seedy.

A serving, also known as an "ounce-equivalent," consists of one slice of whole-wheat bread, 1/2 cup of cooked brown rice, one cup of ready-to-eat whole-grain cereal or three cups of popcorn. The right muffins, pastas and even pancakes can help out the heart.

"Consuming an average of 2.5 servings of whole grains each day is associated with a 21 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease," said lead author Dr. Phillip Mellen, an assistant professor of internal medicine at the Winston-Salem, N.C., school.

Jury Is Still Out on Gluten, the Latest Dietary Villain

By KATE MURPHY
New York Times

Brandi Walzer, a 29-year-old cartographer in Savannah, Ga., loves bread, not to mention pizza and beer. But she tries to avoid them, because they contain gluten — a substance she says upsets her stomach, aggravates her arthritis and touches off depression.

She is among a growing number of Americans who believe that gluten — a protein found in wheat, barley and rye — is responsible for a variety of ills, from skin eruptions to infertility to anxiety to gas. Though diagnostic tests have not indicated she has an allergy or sensitivity to gluten, she nonetheless says she is better off without it.

“I struggle with sticking to a gluten-free diet,” she said, “but when I do, I feel much better.”

News from The Canadian Celiac Association: Celiac Disease - Still Hidden and Dangerous!

Mississauga, ON April 24, 2007 – Imagine having a dangerous disease and having to go through more than a decade of testing before doctors even diagnose it. This is the cold reality for thousands of individuals with celiac disease in Canada, according to a study published in the April edition of the medical journal Digestive Diseases and Sciences.

Despite advances in medical practice, long delays in diagnosis of celiac disease remain. This is a key finding of the Canadian Celiac Health Survey. “This survey, prepared by the Professional Advisory Board of the Canadian Celiac Association and conducted on the members of the Association, is the largest celiac health survey of its kind ever conducted in the world,” noted Dr. Ann Cranney, the study’s lead author.

On average it takes nearly 12 years from the appearance of symptoms to confirmation of diagnosis," added Dr. Connie Switzer, Chair of the Professional Advisory Board and co-author of the study.

On Foot Across East Africa - The Shadow of Kilimanjaro

Great Music for Good Cause: Autism

Autism Speaks has created a music video of the Five for Fighting song "World," which features images of autistic children and their families. It is a truly moving video and was the work of Bill Shea. Five%20for%20Fighting.JPG
The band is generously donating $0.49 to Autism Speaks for each time the video is viewed - the funding goes toward research studies to help find a cure. When you have a moment, please visit the link below to watch the video and pass it along to your friends and family. They are aiming for 10,000 hits, but hopefully we can help them to surpass this goal.
